REVEAL Revealed Part Four
This is the final of a four part series regarding the results from the Reveal survey taken in March. Last month we discussed Shepherd's results and the areas of opportunity including: focusing on areas that move people along the spiritual journey, providing compelling worship, focusing on the Bible, expanding adult education, and continuing what we are doing well. We also discussed how the board and staff are working together to address those opportunities. This month we will focus on how we plan to address those areas of opportunity.
Combined planning meeting...
As mentioned in last month's communication, the board, senior staff, and Reveal committee met to begin planning our approach for addressing these opportunities and to ensure these areas are in alignment with the strategies. We agreed we would begin by establishing three teams each with a particular area of focus.
...the teams
Each team will consist of representatives from the current staff, a couple members of the congregation with subject matter expertise, a facilitator, and a representative from the Reveal survey team. A member of the board will also be assigned to assist in forming the teams and to lay the foundation for what we are trying to accomplish. They will not be involved in ongoing team meetings.
...the areas of focus
There will be one team for each of the following areas:
- Providing compelling worship
- Integrating and teaching basic fundamentals and personal spiritual practices
- Creating a passion to serve by being the hands and feet of Jesus
Each team will be provided with the Reveal survey areas of opportunity they will be addressing as well as a list of brainstormed ideas from previous board and staff meetings.
...the process
Each team will follow a common process and will have common expectations.
- First the teams will be asked to identify the specific problems that are preventing or limiting Shepherd members from higher levels of satisfaction or engagement for their area of focus.
- They will then review the existing situation (often called the “as is”). This step requires objectivity and open communication.
- The next step is defining the “to be” - the vision of what we would like it to look like in the future. As fun as it is to dream, we also have to be realistic based on limited resources.
- The dreams will then go through a validation process to ensure we are satisfying our mission, purpose, values, and beliefs as well as addressing the problems identified.
- Finally, the teams will create an action plan on how we get from where we are today to where we dream to be.
...the schedule
The month of August was spent identifying all the team members and preparing for the kick-off meetings. We would like each team to have their initial action plan completed by December 1 for review and discussion at the December Governing Board meeting.
Addressing the opportunities...
December may seem like a long ways away, but it gives the teams only three months to do their analysis, research, and make recommendations. We want to be sure we are moving Shepherd in a strengthened direction to help us all grow spiritually – to achieve our mission to Reach, Ignite, and Empower people for Jesus. Please keep these teams in your prayers as they commit to follow the leading of the Holy Spirit. As the plans evolve, we will be communicating their progress. Thank you for your invaluable input.
